My mission is simple, to provide happiness through cake! But also to provide birthday cake kits to children and families who are experiencing homelessness, poverty, and/or food insecurity.
Over the summer I spoke with my parents about ways I can give back. We came up with the idea for birthday cake kits after my mom visited the HomeFront Food Pantry in Lawrenceville, NJ. We talked about what makes birthday’s special and I said, “Cake!”.
I realized that many kids don’t get a birthday cake because they are very expensive to buy pre-made ($15.00-$20.00 on average). It also costs people money to have to go and buy a cake - gas, time off work, and maybe childcare. I thought that it would be nice to provide people with the ability to make their own cakes, especially when they are struggling with other things that might seem or feel more important than a birthday cake.
I also realized that not everyone has access to an oven, which is why I included the option of “Mug Treats”, which are simple just add water cakes you can make in a microwave. I am also not including eggs. This is because most pantries already offer eggs and they are not shelf stable.
In the future I hope to work with larger companies, such as Nestle and General Mills to get donations made in bulk so no one, anywhere, has to celebrate a special occasion without a cake.
